Less The Band – Bear
The first release from Less is Chapter One in the greatest story ever rendered by bearded woodland creatures, rats, and robots. Look for a new volume of Less music this Fall and the World Premiere of Less the Band's ASTROLAND at The Kitchen Dec. 10,11,12, and 13 2008. (www.thekitchen.org.)
Reviews for Bear:
Stephen George, Louisville Eccentric Obsever
Less the band (is) a new NYC project involving some well-reputed Louisville folks (Ray Rizzo, you make me smile!) They're bluesy like Captain Beefheart, with all kinds of weird barking vocals that play like percussion, and a Sonic Youth sense of noise parameters. "Cord on Rat," a disjointed paranoid fantasy a la Radiohead or Pink Floyd (lyrically), jumps with the unbounded energy of a child first discovering open spaces. "I Don't Know You Now" does the Flaming Lips (just for, like, 30 seconds) better than the Flaming Lips do. Speaking of, that song kicks off a three-tune, 23-minute denouement that shows the band's supreme musical athleticism. Do not — I repeat, DO NOT — miss this album.
Adam Harrington, Whisperin and Hollerin,UK
Much has been made of the post-punk revival lately, but Less The Band more accurately reflects the no-compromise edges of the genre's original philosophy than many of today's wanna-be's. With obvious influences ranging from Public Image Ltd. to Sonic Youth and the Pixies, Less the Band embody the damn the mainstream attitude which sparked post-punk in the first place.

A Late Freeze
By Danica Novgorodoff
www.danicanovgorodoff.com
Danica's graphic novel companion to the world of Less the Band was released at the time of Bear. The story of A Late Freeze started with talks in the van during Less' first (and thus far only) tour of the midwest and then became something elegant and unexpected when seen through the eyes of Danica. Also check out her most recent release, Slow Storm, published this year by First Second.
A Tribute To The Rudyard Kipling
Motherlodge Vol. 1
A Tribute To The Rudyard Kipling
The recording that set it all in motion. A 2003 compilation of
Louisville artists that includes unreleased songs by My Morning Jacket,
King Kong, Speed To Roam, The Pennies, and Lightnin Rod Jones.
Motherlodge Vol. 1 helped our favorite local venue out of a rough
time. Today The Rudyard Kipling is still kicking, and the proceeds from this cd
still go to Ken and Sheila Pyle, unless they insist we give the money
to other Motherlodges.

a.m. Sunday - Ladies and Gentlemen
The only full length volume of music by the short lived basement soul
band led by Miss Suki (now of Sandpaper Dolls), Darrick Wood (composer
for Squallis Puppeteers), and myself. Sometimes we'll play when we
are all in the same city. For the other times there is this fine
recording, co-engineered by David Barrick and the late great Nate
Robinson.
